Graphite production in Mozambique

Mozambique is a significant player in global graphite production, with the Balama mine in Cabo Delgado province being a major contributor. The country is positioned as a key supplier to the North American and global markets, particularly for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. While production saw a significant drop in 2024, there are forecasts for a 20% increase in 2025, though it may still be below pre-2024 levels.

Key aspects of graphite production in Mozambique:
    Balama Mine:
This is one of the largest graphite reserves globally and a major production site in Mozambique.

    Production Levels:
In 2023, Mozambique produced 41,000 tons in the first quarter, and government forecasts for the year exceeded 329,040 tons. Production dropped by 64% in 2024, with 34,899 tonnes produced.

    Growth and Recovery:
The government anticipates a 20% increase in graphite production for 2025, driven by the start of operations at the DH Mining project in Niassa.

    Industry Importance:
Graphite is a critical mineral for lithium-ion batteries used in EVs, making Mozambique a crucial supplier.

    Mining Companies:
Syrah Resources (through its Balama mine) and Tirupati Graphite are key players in Mozambique's graphite production.

    Challenges:
Production has been impacted by factors like weak international demand and disruptions at the Balama mine, including a temporary suspension due to community protests and a subsequent agreement to resume operations.

    Future Outlook:
Mozambique is expected to see continued growth in graphite production, especially with the expansion of operations like the DH Mining project in Niassa.
